Bodnar Leads Thistles To Victory

A hattrick from Thunder Bay’s Cole Bodnar powered the Kenora Thistles to a 5-4 win over the Yellowhead Chiefs Saturday night.

Bodnar, who spent last season with the U18 ‘AA’ Fort William Canadiens, opened up the scoring on a great feed from James Bichon to give Kenora the 1-0 lead. After Quinn Schutte tied things up for Yellowhead, Bodnar notched his second of the night on an almost identical play assisted by Bichon and Alex Booth. Hudson Gagne would score his first of the season (assisted by Callum McCormick and Jack Noel) to give the Thistles a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period.

Gagne would score his second of the game, and the season, in the middle frame assisted by Reidar Paquette. Bo Tibbatts would snipe one home past Morgan Blackwood on the powerplay later in the period, and the two teams would head into the third period with Thistles up 4-2.

In the third Bodnar potted his third of the game (unassisted), which would stand as the game winner.

Blackwood picked up his first win in a Thistles jersey, stopping 51 of the 55 shots that he faced. This was his third time with over 40 saves, and his second with over 50 saves.

The two teams will meet again Sunday with puck drop coming at 1:30pm CST.
