Cougars Shut Out Thistles

The Thistles fell to 0-5-0-1 Sunday with a 9-0 road loss in Souris, MB to the Southwest Cougars.

Nine different Cougars had multi-point games, including three-point performances from Jesse Brown, Ryder Heaphy, Jack Clark and Bryan Laing.

Between the pipes, Micky Gross was solid for his team making 23 saves. It was the second shutout of his Manitoba U18 ‘AAA’ Hockey League career, the other coming in October of 2022 against the Thistles.

Morgan Blackwood made 21 saves in net for Kenora, picking up his third loss of the season. James Hill came in in relief at the halfway point of the second period, and made 17 saves.

The Thistles did have to play the entire third period without alternate captain Reid Pitura, who left the game after being hit from behind by Cougars forward Jackson Hofer. As a result, Hofer was given a five-minute major (checking from behind) and a game misconduct.

Next up for Kenora is a Friday night tilt in Winnipeg against the Thrashers, before returning home for a rematch with the EastMan Selects on Sunday.
